There are a lot of ways to earn some extra money as a Developer. You can develop Apps or websites, you can write technology articles, sell courses and of course writing articles (in medium or other platforms).
In this article we will see a “tutorial” of how to can create your own product and sell it through Gumroad. As a Developer you can use this website to create your own products and sell them. Before going on details let’s see what is Gumroad.

Gumroad is a powerful, but simple, e-commerce platform. We make it easy to earn your first dollar online by selling digital products, memberships and more.

With Gumroad, you’re not limited to selling just digital downloads either. You can sell rentals, physical products, pre-orders, membership products that charge recurring fees, and even full-fledged software using license keys.
Find and Idea to sell on Gumroad as a Developer
Let’s see some ideas of products you may sell on Gumroad.
If you are a developer you have plenty of option about products to sell. One idea is to make Software and sell it (yes you can do it here). If you are not interested in writing code you can create Technology articles (or technical if you want to) and publish them as PDF and sell the PDF. You are not limited of pages or something. Other idea could be to create a course etc.
Find the area you are good at and start creating your first product.
How to create your first Product
Creating a product on Gumroad is really easy. In some cases it could take less than 5 minutes to create something.
Let’s see an example of some articles (in PDF) that i uploaded for free and let’s see how you can set a price on the product.
After creating your account you will see a button “New Product”, just click on that and check the initial configuration. You will see the screen below:
You can see that there are a lot of products to sell. Choose the best one for you. In this example i created a “Digital product” and i set my price to “free” with the option that the user can pay me as much as he wants (something like donation)
In the next screen you will see the things you need to upload for your content. First of all a title, a cover, a thumbnail, a description and of course the content (you can upload for example a pdf, an image, a zip file with a lot of images etc).

What to need for your first Sale
One “not so great” thing about Gumroad is that if you don’t have a mailing list, some followers of creating some ads is difficult to sell your first Product. After making some sales it will be more easy for you because you could activate the “Discovery” option.
For start, you can share the links to social media (like facebook, twitter etc) or as in this case share the link to one of your articles.
Discovery option
I believe this is one of the most important thing on this site if you have a good product and you don’t have any followers or money for paid ads.
To be eligible for Discovery you need to have at least 10$ in sales. After that people can find you from the search bar of Gumroad directly. Discovery come with a fee on your sales, but you are able to decide the fee based on your needs. For example you can set it to 10% or 80%, but remember more percentage, better results in the discovery.
Gumroad is very easy and fast to use and if you grow your audience you could make a great amount of money. Remember sometimes is better to offer a free service in order to get more audience. Build your audience and then think to make paid products (in my opinion).
